Abstract

The present study was based on data obtained through a questionnaire survey administered to students attending higher education institutions (HEIs) regarding drug use on campus or in the vicinity of the institution where they attend higher education. This research aims to obtain information on the practical existence of drug use in higher education, where drugs are sold/purchased, who sells them, where they are consumed, and to identify the existence of preventive measures aimed at combating this phenomenon, which is considered deviant. In order to achieve the predefined objectives, the research was defined as descriptive and basic in nature, using a bibliographic method that allowed the fundamental concepts inherent to the theme to be addressed and, with regard to data collection, a questionnaire survey and, at the same time, the analysis and synthesis method. The methodology employed revealed that students consume various types of drugs, both legal and illegal, within the institutions – in a concealed manner – and in houses, caravans and bars adjacent to the institution – in an exposed manner. The substances were acquired inside and around the university, facilitated by the lack of specific preventive measures against drug use by students in higher education institutions, which compromises the expectations placed on Angolan higher education.
