The Use of Facebook During the Emergency State by COVID-19: An Experience With Geography Students at the Higher Institute of Education Sciences of Benguela

Abstract

This article presents the results of the experience of teachers and students of the 2nd and 3rd Years of Teaching Degree in Geography at the Higher Institute of Educational Sciences of Benguela, of the Katyavala Bwila University, in the academic use of Facebook during the state emergency by COVID-19. The aim of the study was to analyze the potential of Facebook to support the teaching-learning process, as a contribution to the expansion of this tool to support Angolan teacher in the higher education institutions, in times of pandemic. The study is based on the theoretical frameworks that place Facebook among the most used tools and with important results in its adaptation to support classroom teaching, especially in times of crisis. For this purpose, a questionnaire for data collection was elaborated, based on the dimensions and indicators determined from the theoretical considerations assumed in this study. The results obtained place Facebook as the most used social network in support of face-to-face education, despite the contextual difficulties associated with the type of phones, in the absence of computers at home, the poor quality of the internet and constant lack of data balance, which they limit the sharing of video lessons and other documents, limiting themselves to the exploration of written discussion tools, which limits the training and development of other domains of learning, such as the psycho-motor forum.

Fernando Vianeque Agostinho, Instituto Superior de Ciências da Educação de Benguela, Angola

PhD in Pedagogical Sciences, Master in Environmental Management and Natural Resources and Degree in Educational Sciences, Geography option, Assistant Professor at the Higher Institute of Educational Sciences in Benguela, University Katyavala Bwila, with 13 years of teaching experience. He has already worked as Head of Department for Overcoming and Qualifying Staff, and Deputy General Director of the National Institute for Scholarship Management in the Ministry of Higher Education. He is currently Professor of Geography and Secretary of the Scientific Commission for the Master's in Methodology of Primary Education. He has more than 11 publications, 2 courses taught and more than 18 communications at national and international events in the area of Technical and Pedagogical Sciences.

Inês Alice Saveta, Instituto Superior de Ciências da Educação de Benguela, Angola

Master in Didactics of Higher Education and PhD student in Educational Sciences from the Autonomous University of Asunción, Paraguay. Assistant Professor at the Higher Institute of Educational Sciences in Benguela, University Katyavala Bwila, with 24 years of teaching experience. He has already served as Head of Department for Academic Affairs at ISCED Benguela and as Head of Postgraduate Department at the Rectorate of Katyavala Bwila University. She is currently Professor of Physical Geography of Continents and Pedagogical Practices at ISCED in Benguela. He has 2 communications at national events in the area of Educational Sciences.
